Let’s face it, school cafeterias are not the best places for our kids to eat healthy. School is back, and we have to take precautions to not only make sure we give them the nutrition they need, but to also make sure they don’t gain weight and become sick. The first ingredient is to avoid the “junk” food at schoool.
Making a healthy lunch box:
- Include: fruit, organic yogurt, nuts, vegetables like carrots and celery with chickpea hummus, almond or peanut butter with crackers high in fiber, sandwiches made with whole wheat bread and a protein like tuna, a low fat cheese, hard boiled eggs, amongst others.
- Include: water or herbal teas, coconut water, natural fruit juices.
Presentation is key, so we have to be creative and make them more appetizing to kids. For dressings, we can use vegetarian mayonnaise, hummus, guacamole, or dressings made of yogurt, and olive oil instead of butters. Other key ingredients are nuts of any kind, as long as your child is not allergic, seeds, dry fruit, or energy bars with natural ingredients and no sugar added.
It’s very important we don’t forget that the most valuable example, is the one we give at home.
