The heartbreak pill!

Anjanette Delgado

Anjanette Delgado is a charismatic, humble, and humorous writer and producer that aside from achieving numerous accomplishments, aspires to continue growing. Not only did she make me eager to read her future writings, but left a thought in my mind; why can’t we follow our own advice when it comes to heartbreak? We got the opportunity to talk one-on-one with her, she shared some personal experiences and made us laugh, but most importantly, she told us what inspires this talented Boricua to do everything she does.

What was the first book you ever wrote?
The first book I wrote is “The Heartbreak Pill.” I wrote things I thought were books but were never published. I think my first book was a novel, I wrote it when I was 10 years old and it was called “California Girl” believe it or not! It was long and bad, but “The Heartbreak Pill” is the first one I actually published. I think I was too afraid to take that step, this one took forever, but I did it.

What made you want to write this novel?
The number one driver that made me want to write this story was, and i’m still fascinated by it: heartbreak. What happens when your heart breaks? Why is it that you can be smart about tons of things, you can give advice to your friends, to your mother even, and you sound like the adult and when it comes to your own life you can’t follow your own advice and can’t even come up with it? I don’t know about you, but I’ve called and hung up! It’s 12 year old! I know it’s stupid! What is this thing that makes you act in a way you don’t want to act, it’s heartbreak!

There’s a pill for almost everything. Do you really think there should be a heart break pill?
Absofreakinglutely! I’m not saying everyone should go and get pills but a lot of things could be avoided if people understood that the heart is as important as having a cold. When you have a cold you tell your boss “I’m staying in” and it’s fine, but if you tell your boss “I broke up with my boyfriend” that’s unprofessional right? A cold is nothing next to your world being completely destroyed. It kills your self esteem, and your dreams that define you.

How would you describe yourself?
I’m going to find one word: growing. I don’t want to be VP, I don’t want a big title, I keep changing. I like to make my own rules. I could spend a whole afternoon making collages. That to me is doing something worthwhile because it’s creative, or writing a story, writing a poem, or talking on the phone with a friend for hours.  Definitely growing and being happier and happier and figuring out how to design my own life better.

What is next for Anjanette Delgado?
My next project is “The Clairvoyant of Calle Ocho” but It won’t be out until next year. For now, I am currently an editor for the Arts & Culture section on Siempre Mujer magazine. I have my own column called Tu Fin de Semana at  Charlablog.com. I also write for www.thewiselatinawomanblog.com which is not just for Latinas, it’s for everyone. I write about everything; tips I’ve found that work for me, creativity, etc…

And finally, what’s your IN place in Miami?
Books and Books in Coral Gables. Its home to me, I go there a lot. It’s the first place in Miami I felt at “home” when I moved from Atlanta. It took me a while to get used to Miami, and I like the homey feeling. I mean, how can you not like a place with books?
