A well-deserved tribute to maestro Aldemaro Romero will take place in Miami on May 9th, at Littman Theater in North Miami Beach. This initiative, sponsored by Venezuelan-American Chamber of Commerce and Alas Solidarias (Solidarity Wings) Foundation, promises a night of music excelence as renowned Latin American musicians revisit the most representative pieces of his work.

Maestro Aldemaro Romero (1928-2007) was one of the most prolific Venezuelan composers, known worldwide as the creator of the Onda Nueva (new wave,) a fusion of folk music of his native country with rhythms like the Bossa Nova and jazz. Onda Nueva marked an era and granted him his place in the international music scene. Aldemaro, was also known for sharing with important musicians of different generations, both Venezuelan and of other nationalities. He was founder and conductor of the Caracas Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Radio and Television Romanian, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Recently, the University of Miami acquired Aldemaro’s music score archives to put it within the reach of the prestigious University music students.

Under Carlos Puchi’s musical direction, a myriad of musicians will be parading through the wide repertoire of the maestro. Among them: María Teresa Chacín, Malena Burke, Huáscar Barradas, Luz Marina, María Rivas, Pedro Castillo, Federico Britos, Estelita del Llano, Divine, Junior Romero and Leo Quintero. In addition, will feature two great hosts: Eli Bravo and John De Souza.

The proceeds from the concert will benefit Alas Solidarias foundation, a social responsibility program of SBA Airlines and Aserca Airlines, which provides support to nonprofit organizations and to low-income families with infants with health problems who need transportation for medical treatment.  The Venezuelan-American Chamber of Commerce will also be benefited by the proceeds.

Jai alai is a sport that involves a ball being bounced off of walled space and has its roots in the Basque region of Spain where it is known as, “zesta-punta”, which means basket tip. It is known as one of the fastest sports in the world as the ball can reach speeds of up 200 mph! The jai alai court consists of a 3 walls (front, back and side) with one side open so spectators can watch. The court is formally known as a fronton. The court has 14 parallel lines, with line #1 closest to the front wall. The object of the game is to serve and land the ball between lines 4 and 7 on the floor. Games are usually in a round robin format of 8 teams, with two team people per team . The first team to score 7 to 9 points wins. There are plenty more rules, but this is the gist of the game.

One very unique thing about jai alai is the way in which the ball is hurled at the wall, the cesta which means basket in Basque. It’s a long skinny, woven basket that is custom fitted to the player and hasn’t changed in hundreds of years!

Jai alai is played worldwide, and most notably in former Spanish colonies including The Philippines and Mexico. The first time jai alai was seen in America was in St. Louis at the 1904 World’s Fair. It is especially popular in Miami as it’s not only a sport, but seen as an alternative gambling option for horse and dog racing (both also popular in Miami). The first fronton was opened at Hialeah race track in 1924 when gambling was more of a spectator sport before the rise of online gambling like on www.mobilecasino.co.nz. You can still watch jai alai matches today at a few places in Florida including Miami Jai Alai (built in 1926) and Dania Jai Alai. But, don’t wait too long as the sport is quickly vanishing and the main draw to most of the frontons these days is poker!

Sons of Mariel are on tour and they will stop in Miami for an intimate performance of their new music.

Singer/songwriter Diego Val (The Voice) and Grammy ® nominated guitarist/songwriter George Pajon Jr. (Black Eyed Peas) joined their talents to create Sons of Mariel.

George Pajon has long since solidified his place among music’s top songwriters. He penned numerous chart-toppers playing guitar alongside the Black Eyed Peas for more than a decade. His writing and guitar chops have been featured on over 63 million records sold worldwide; George has consistently proven himself as a tour de force combining his natural talent on guitar with creativity and the willingness to reinvent himself after all these years. He’s written for The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, Carlos Santana, Ricky Martin and countless others. In 2012 George shifted his attention to writing his own music and hooked up with Diego to bring you the Sons of Mariel.

At just Twenty-six year old Peruvian born Diego Val is an old soul. That is clearly translated through his lyrics and his soulful rasp. Overcoming an early childhood disease fueled Diego’s fire to beat the odds. He first picked up a guitar and began singing at 14 years old to help ease the pain of Perthes Disease that had almost crippled him. At eighteen years old, Diego moved to Miami and quickly picked up English. His good looks and charming demeanor landed him numerous modeling and acting gigs upon his arrival. He was featured in numerous magazines and TV campaigns both stateside and in his native Peru, landing a starring role on their #1 soap opera La Tyson Corazon Rebelde. While modeling and acting have provided an outlet for Diego, his passion remains with music. In 2012 he caught the attention of the Producers of The Voice and made it through the several rounds as a member of Team Cee Lo.

A chance meeting between them quickly turned into The Sons of Mariel, a platform that embraces the spirit of George and Diego’s native countries Cuba and Peru, combined, to create something extraordinary. The following months saw them carefully shape their sound and hone their live show. Now, it’s finally time to share it with the world.

After launching the project in LA, Sons of Mariel come to Miami, Diego’s home, to perform at PAX. The best local musicians and djs will also be participating in this amazing night.

The Rhythm Foundation’s Heineken TransAtlantic Festival returns to the North Miami Bandshell. The Festival explores modern world music from the great cities of the Atlantic rim – Europe, Africa, Brazil, Argentina, the Caribbean, NYC, and features artists working in the beautiful collision between traditional rhythms and electronica/DJ culture.

For the eleventh edition, TransAtlantic Festival presents electrotango collective, Bajofondo; Colombian Bomba Estereo, Carioca duo,  Zuzuka Poderosa & Kush Arora; plus opening local acts by The Hongs and Krisp; a kick off party at BlackBird Ordinary, after parties at Sandbar Lounge and a closing party at Gramps.

Marialejandra Martin, Indira Leal y María Corina Ramírez interpretan a las “Cristinas”, tres mujeres que se ven sometidas a las presiones que ejerce sobre ellas -y sobre todas las mujeres- el modelo patriarcal vigente.

The original and biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration just got better. JohnMartin’s Irish Pub & Restaurant is taking the Irish festivities one step further by extending the celebration all weekend long. This year’s roundup of events includes:

• Friday, March 15: JohnMartin’s famous St. Patrick’s Day Street Party, will feature food, drinks and live musical performances by Deck 52 and U2 by UV tribute band. U2 by UV will delight the crowd with the U2 live concert experience, playing the hits and classics that have made U2 one of the biggest bands in the world and Ireland’s number one musical export. The party-goers will enjoy delicious items such as fish and chips, chicken tenders, corn beef sandwiches, hotdogs, and Irish beverages. The Street Party is free and open to the public, and starts at 5 p.m. along Salzedo St. and Aragon Avenue in Coral Gables.

• Saturday, March 16: The festivities continue with a prix fixe St. Patrick’s Eve’ Dinner with live Irish entertainment by Paddy Kelleghan, starting at 6 p.m. The Irish-themed menu includes potato soup or salad, for starters; corned beef and cabbage, Gaelic steak, or salmon fillet for entrées; and for dessert, baileys ice cream or Bushmills bread pudding. The price is $30 per person.

• Sunday, March 17: On St. Patrick’s Day, and to culminate the weekend of celebrations, JohnMartin’s will host a breakfast buffet featuring a live bagpiper performance and live entertainment all day.  The buffet will open from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with St. Patrick’s Day specials continuing throughout the day.  The price is $24.50 per person.
