Gabriel Gimenez, better known as GG, is only twenty years old, but this painter has already accomplished many things. He was recently named Artist of the Year by Tropical Nights, a program that helps those affected by autism, and already has his paintings in Italy. He is the true definition of ”you can do anything you set your mind to” and he has all the talent and the drive to take him even further.
How did you discover you creative side?
Little by little. I was always looking for a way to express myself, and somehow, I was never satisfied until I started painting. It started in school, I was always drawing and my senior year of high school I decided to really go for it and do it professionally, it all happened very quickly.
Tell us a little bit about your style.
I haven’t found a specific name for it, but for now I call it Pop Art, it’s the easiest way to describe it. I use a lot of comic abstraction and abstraction in general, but I call it Pop Art. I still have a lot to explore.
You’re very young and you’ve accomplished a lot, what is your ultimate goal?
I would like to have my own gallery, I want to be able to take my art around the world and be an international artist.
Do you have any formal training or are you self-taught?
I never studied art, I only took one class in high school but everything I’ve learned is because I practice a lot. I think practice and dedication is what makes perfection.
Do you ever have painter’s block? If so, how do you deal with it?
Yes, it happens to me often. To tell you the truth, I just try to see new things and if I’m in front of the canvas and I can’t paint, I just put it away and try to do something else. When I get inspired, I try again because I don’t like to force things. The best ideas come out spontaneously.
Where can people see your paintings?
Right now I have an exhibition at the Design District, Art Fusion Gallery. I have another exhibition in Milan, Italy; my first international exhibition so i’m very excited about that. You can also check my website www.ggartwork.com
What’s the price range?
It depends on the size of the painting. I started selling the big ones for like $100, and right now the biggest one I’ve sold was $4,000. A small one right now goes for $100, but it all depends.
What would you say to young people that want to pursue their dreams and don’t know how.
Well, I always say that if the dream is strong enough, you will accomplish it. If you don’t really have the desire and the drive to make it, then you won’t and maybe it really wasn’t their dream. When you really want to do and pursue something, something comes over you and you HAVE to do it, and you won’t feel satisfied until you do. And of course, don’t waste time, because it is extremely valuable and you can’t get it back.
And finally, what’s your favorite place in Miami?
Design District, definitely. That’s where I would like to live, even though my friends don’t really know much about that area, it’s my favorite place. The ambiance is so creative and you always find something new. So definitely Design District or Wynwood.
