Summer is finally here! The beach is packed with people, sun is shinning and the days are beautiful, but… it is TOO HOT! Besides giving our skin a beautiful summer glow, the sun increases our body temperature and the humidity in Miami doesn’t help. If we don’t hydrate our body properly, this could seriously affect our health.
What can we do? What is the best way to stay hydrated? Take a look at my recommendations.
DO DRINK:
1. WATER: Nothing can substitute water, not only does it give us liquids and regulates our body temperature, it gives our skin a much younger look, and best of all.. it does not have calories. There are many people that are not used to drinking water because it doesn’t taste like anything, but there are ways to make it a little more interesting: a few lime drops, berries at the bottom of the jar, sliced cucumbers, etc.
2. HERBAL TEA: In this case, we are talking about the natural ones, the ones you can prepare the traditional way and put on the fridge to make it cool on this hot weather.
3. SMART WATER: I want to mention this water that is a little different and could work for those who do any type of sport or exercise. I mention this specific one because it does not have any extra sugar added, and the minerals are enough to replace those lost through sweat.
4. NATURAL JUICES: If we are craving something with a little more flavor, we can always turn to natural juices; when we say natural we mean NO sugar. You can always get a little creative and mix fruits and vegetables like carrots, pineapples, lime, celery, and any combination you would like.
5. COCONUT WATER: It’s no secret that coconut water is the healthiest option when you are thirsty. It is low in carbs, 99% fat free, low in sugars, keeps your body cool, promotes weight loss, controls diabetes, detoxifies and fights viruses, it’s great after exercising. We could keep going but it would take too long, oh yeah! and it tastes GREAT!
AVOID DRINKING:
1. SODAS: None of these are healthy… I think we already know they all have artificial flavors, chemicals, sugar, and the ones that say “zero calories” are actually worse because they make the consumer believe they’re good for their diet when in fact, they are extremely bad for your health.
2. “ORGANIC” TEAS: You have to be careful with these, they might actually be organic but the amount of sugar they posses is immense. The word “organic” does not guarantee that it’s healthy or recommended. Arizona Rx Energy is equivalent to six cinnamon roll pop tarts, another example is the SoBe Green Tea which is equivalent to four slices of Sarah Lee cherry pie.
3. COFFEE: Even with no sugar added or with ice to make it cooler, coffee is the worst option when it comes to hydrating. Stay away from it when it’s hot outside.
4. ENERGY DRINKS: These are loaded with sugar and excessive minerals, and even though they make them seem great and energizing,
5. COCKTAILS/FROZEN BEVERAGES: Even though it’s great to be by the pool accompanied by a cocktail, sugar and alcohol double the calories making it a bad combination for our bodies and health.
So this summer, don’t forget to wear your sunscreen, sunglasses, drink lots of water (or any other option mentioned above), and enjoy this beautiful Miami weather with a hydrated body.
Cheers!
