Kayakman’s Frontman

In Miami, a city where Pop, Latin, Hip Hop, and Trance music reign supreme, three talented guys that go by the name of Kayakman, have carved a pretty sweet niche for themselves. This local band proves that among other things, Miami sure knows how to rock. With over 50 songs written, performances all over Miami, participations in recognized festivals, and voted “Best of Miami Music Award” by Miami New Times in 2006 and 2009, The three-piece of this talented group have certainly created a sound of their own. We recently chatted with Tato, Kayakman’s frontman, and here’s what he had to say.

So tell us…

Where did the name Kayakman come from?
The name came from a song we wrote. Our keyboard player, Fernando, suggested it was a good name for the band and we all agreed. We kept it and it’s worked out great.

When did it all become official?
We met a long time ago, but it all started in 2003. One day we went to a party, started jamming to a song called “I wasn’t ready”, people liked it and that was the first time we actually played. When we saw people’s reaction, we decided we needed to continue making that kind of music.

Tell us a little bit about your music, how would you describe it?
Our music is a mix between Reggae, Funk, Rock, Bossa nova, and then we add our own personal touch.

What inspires the band to write songs and create different sounds?
When we write songs, we get inspired by whatever we are going through at the moment. When it comes to our sound, we like to make people dance and enjoy themselves, we like to create sounds that are fun to listen to.

Where have you performed before?
We have performed in so many places in Miami. Bardot, Bayfront Park, Bayside, Hard Rock Casino, Jazid, Senor Frog’s, The Victor Hotel, Waxy O’Connor Irish Pub, to name a few.

Which one is your favorite?
Bardot is definitely my favorite, there’s something about it that makes us feel at home.

Some bands have some types of rituals and things they like to do before they go on stage, do you have any?
Yes, we like to drink colada, haha. It gives us all the energy we need.

And finally, what’s your favorite place in Miami?
Like I said before, I love going to Bardot. It’s one of the best places in the city for live music, drinks and hanging out with friends.
