2010 Resolutions, Miami Style

Resolutions

2010 has begun: a new year, a new decade, one more chance to make it happen. So we decided to go through the most popular new year’s resolutions and help you find a way to stick to them here In Miami.

Lose Weight
We know, every year we give up into temptations. We have friends to visit, parties to enjoy, delicious food to taste and when the holidays are over we end up with a few more pounds. If you are determined to shed them for good and lead a healthy life, forget about those “one size fit all” diets. Contact Dr. Montserrat Rodriguez for a diet that fits you lifestyle, your age, even your body type.

Choose what you eat carefully, opt for healthier organic foods instead of the easier way out: a drive through. Garden Eat’in www.gardeneatin.com

Adriana Martin is a mom, wife and business owner, and as she says, she doesn’t have a nanny or driver, so if you are busy person but don’t want to give up on having a fit body she might be the one you are looking for to help you. And if you are planning on having a baby this year, keep her in mind.

You can always opt for an old free walk or bike ride. You can do it by yourself and enjoy some time alone or join a group.

Help others
Giving back is one of the most rewarding experiences and a lot of people really mean to do it but don’t know how to start. Or maybe they feel that they don’t have time or enough money. If “helping others” is on your list, and you want to do it this year, here are a few ideas to start doing the right thing.

Have you ever found yourself thinking ¨closet full of clothes, but nothing to wear¨? Just clean your closet and give it away.  There’s people out there who would wear what you have in your closet and haven’t worn in years, including, maybe, some of your friends. Donate it to Goodwill, with its 22 locations in Miami to donate, there’s no excuse. http://www.goodwillmiami.com/donation_centers.cfm
You can also contact Miami Rescue Mission. Not only they receive your donations, but also give you opportunity to get into a volunteer program. http://www.miamirescuemission.com/

Would you be willing to spend a year of your life helping others? City Year does just that. They look for volunteers who can serve as role models and help children and their community for an entire year. Like they say “Give a year. Change the world.”

Learn how to cook
The Whole Foods in Coral Gables has a state of the art lifestyle center where they hold monthly wine and beer tasting and cooking demonstrations. Most of them are free, although some of them require a $5 fee.

Miami Dade College offers cooking classes through its community education program at the Kendall, Interamerican and Wolfson campuses. You can usually find one session classes for $39-$55.

Help the environment
Miami is a city committed to becoming a model for environmental best practices, so this is the place where you can start to act local and impact global.

You can start from adopting easy practices at home like recycling, changing your light bulbs to efficient ones, carpooling, riding your bike instead of using your car, but you can also do something for your community. Take a trip
We all want to go to Europe or take a trip somewhere exotic, but if your budget doesn’t allow that much wanted vacation, or just don’t have much time to spear, start from the basics and get to know Miami and the many different things it has to offer.

Visit the Everglades. The Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and it is just on your backyard. These are great days to camp and enjoy what nature has for you.

If you are more a beach type, head east and within sight of downtown Miami, there is a fantastic water wonderland in Key Biscayne. Plan your visit and enjoy. www.nps.gov/bisc/index.htm

You would never believe you are in a city when you go to Oleta River State Park. Located at 3400 NE 163rd Street, Miami, Florida 33160. Admission is $6.00 per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle. $4.00 Single Occupant Vehicle. $2.00 Pedestrians, bicyclists. $ 55 per night, plus tax, to rent a rustic cabin. Call 305-919-1846 for details or visit www.floridastateparks.org/oletariver/

You can also check in for a weekend in your favorite hotel. Miami has welcomed tourist for years, why not do it for you?

Quit smoking.
New year is a good time to work on kicking off unhealthy habits, and quit smoking is probably the one that many people put on their list. They know they have to do it, but it is not as easy as they wish. So if you are one of many who wants to give it a try, here is a place where you can find some help.
