The 2010 Sony Ericsson Open is here. One of the most anticipated sport tournaments in our city kicks off this Monday and for two weeks Key Biscayne becomes the ultimate destination the world’s best players and the best fans.
Once again, the Sony Ericsson Open will feature a star-studded cast highlighted by World No. 1′s and Australian Open champions Roger Federer and Serena Williams.
The two will be among the world’s best 79 men and 76 women tennis players from around the globe returning to the Tennis Center at Crandon Park. A total of thirty-five countries will be represented when tournament play begins on the purple courts March 22- April 4, on Key Biscayne. An electrifying 13 days of tennis conclude with the women’s final on Saturday, April 3 and the men’s final on Sunday, April 4.
Roger Federer, who captured his 16th Grand Slam title with his win at this year’s Australian Open, will return to the Sony Ericsson Open seeking his third title in Key Biscayne. Serena Williams returned from the Australian Open with her 12th grand Slam title and is looking to bounce back from her 2009 finals’ loss at the Sony Ericsson Open to win a record-setting sixth title at Key Biscayne this year.
Among other players expected to battle Federer for the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open title are six-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, defending Sony Ericsson Open champion Andy Murray; 2009 U.S. Open Champion Juan Del Potro; 2007 Sony Ericsson Open champion and last year’s finalist Novak Djokovic; and American Andy Roddick (2004 Champion).
Williams enters the tournament, seeking her sixth Sony Ericsson Open title in nine years. Her five wins at Key Biscayne currently tie her with Steffi Graf for most singles titles in Sony Ericsson Open history.
In a quest to set her own record, Williams will face an eager field of challengers including 2009 U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters (2005 Champion); three-time Sony Ericsson winner Venus Williams; and defending champion Victoria Azarenka.
The qualifying rounds will be played March 22-23 and will determine 12 more slots in each singles draw, while the tournament will award five men’s wildcards and eight women’s wildcards. Women’s main draw play will begin Tuesday, March 23 with the men’s main draw starting on Wednesday, March 24.
It is Miami: let’s not forget fashion and party
The Sony Ericsson Open has earned a reputation as being a highlight of the Miami social calendar and is globally recognized as one of the most anticipated stops on both the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tours. 2010 will be no exception.
The excitement of the two-week event does not stop with the elite level of play on-court. With a fashion show, party tour, on-site entertainment stage, and performances on stadium court the Sony Ericsson Open offers its guests a complete entertainment experience and continues to reinforce its status as the most glamorous event on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour schedules.
For the third consecutive year the Sony Ericsson Open is taking tennis to the people through its Party Tour, taking place during the first weekend of the tournament. The tour has three stops, with the first at CocoWalk in Coconut Grove on Thursday, March 25 at 8 pm. The area, known for its boutiques, restaurants, and nightclubs will transform into a tennis extravaganza giving fans a chance to enjoy much of what the Sony Ericsson Open has to offer.
The following night, Friday March 26, the tour moves to Sunset Place in South Miami at 7 pm, and concludes with a splash Sunday, March 28 at 1 pm with the UM Pool Party at the University Center on campus.
Tennis enthusiasts can try their hand at Top Spin 3 on Sony PlayStation courtesy of Muscle Milk or sit back and watch the pros on a large video board featuring highlights from the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open. Models will be present to hand Sony Ericsson giveaways to fans. To top-off each stop, ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour players will be on hand signing autographs for fans.
The Sony Ericsson Open events at CocoWalk and Sunset Place are free and open to the public. The event at UM is only open to the University Community.
On-site, for the sixth consecutive year, the Sony Ericsson Open will bring fashion to its tennis fans. This year’s show is again presented by FILA, the official apparel and footwear sponsor of the Sony Ericsson Open, and will feature the latest styles from the Italian athletic brand’s Spring 2010 Collection. The show takes place on the entertainment stage at 6:30 p.m. on March 27, prior to world No. 1 and 2010 Australian Open Champion Roger Federer’s opening match. Fans in attendance will get a sneak peek at the brand’s fall fashion line.
FILA’s contribution to the Sony Ericsson Open’s social calendar does not end with the fashion show. The day prior to the show, on Thursday, March 26 at 6 pm, FILA will put on its annual FILA Friday Night at the entertainment stage. During this time, James Blake, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Kim Clijsters will be available for Q&A from fans in attendance.
The on-site Bombay Sapphire Lounge will play host to two top ATP/WTA players on Tuesday, March 30 from 1:30-3:30 pm as they participate in mixology sessions with Bombay Sapphire’s Master Mixologist Gary Hayward. Hayward will instruct the players and those in attendance on how to concoct the Sapphire Ace, the official cocktail of the Sony Ericsson Open, as well as other Bombay Sapphire cocktails.
A second mixology session will also be held on Thursday, April 1 from 2-5:00 pm at the Bombay Sapphire Lounge. In this GQ-mixology session, GQ bartenders Eric Simkins, Nick Kosevich, and Christian Sanders will be creating cocktails inspired by the Sony Ericsson Open tournament.
In addition to the preceding events, throughout the two weeks of the tournament the entertainment stage will be hosting various acts during the day and evening sessions. Attractions include a variety of live musicians and presentations by the Miami Metro Zoo and Jungle Island Zoo.

I Completely recognise what your stance in this subject is. Even if I should disagree on several of the smaller aspects, I think that you did an awesome job outlining it. Definitely beats the need to study it by myself. Cheers.
I really love this guy and I think that he is really best player in the Wolrd. The biggest problem of Federer is that he is makeing to many UE, and such guys like Murray or Djokovic may use it in the future to get number one title..
To say the true – I dont really care if Djokovic is wining or loseing at the moment because I know he is a great player. Federer and Nadal are getting older and older and I am almost sure that I will see this player getting ATP number one title very soon!
For me it doesnt really mather if Andy is wining or losing matches at the moment. I am waiting as he will get ATP number one crown, because with his tallent it must happen, and I think it will be quite fast!
Nadal is a great player. I dont care if he is winning or losing matches. He is fighting on 100%, and its great there is such a “warior” in ATP at the moment!
