Once a year, Miami Beach becomes the city that doesn’t sleep, literally. Sleepless Night, now in its fourth year, is becoming Miami Beach’s largest cultural entertainment event attracting over 100,000 attendees for a 12 hour art extravaganza. The event starts on Saturday, November 5th at 6 pm and continues throughout the entire night.

Over 150 cultural performances at more than 80 venues, and it’s all FREE! And don’t worry about getting to all the different places, there will be free shuttle buses to pick you up and take you to the next location. You can park your car at the garage on 420 Lincoln Road for only $10 from 6pm to 6am.

So sleep during the day, drink coffee or grab some Monster Energy Drinks that will be given out for free to keep you awake, and enjoy and entire night of art and entertainment. For more information, visit their website.

The result will be exhibited next Thursday March 31st, during Bal Harbour Art Nights. You can enjoy an original collection from artists such as Elena Bond, Luciana Abait, Alicia Erminy, Leonel Matheu, Pat Morales, Sandra Perez-Liberman, Carlos Poveda, Orlando Urdaneta among others, curated by Francine Birbragher-Rozencwaig. The works will be sold in a silent auction for the benefit of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.

Check out “Arts en Pointes” at Calypso St. Barth in Bal Harbour Shops, and while you are there, you can also visit photograph exhibitions by Iran Issa-Khan at Saks Fifth Avenue; Peggy Levison Nolan at St. Regis Lounge; Greg Lotus at 100% Capri; Bruce Weber at Books & Books; Bert Stern, Serge Mendjisky and Alaoui Guerra at the Opera Gallery; the The Lotus House’s” By and About Women” at Neiman Marcus and Roberto Cavalli’s photo collection “Black is Never Absolute” at his own location. You can also enjoy music by teachers from Vladimir Issaev’s Music School.

From this Thursday to March 11, this long-running experimental music fest will show music and sound works from an international collection of composers and performers. Vocal and spoken word works, electro-acoustic compositions, sound installations, video and performance pieces round out the schedule of one of the most daring new music festivals in the country.

The XXI Subtropics — Miami’s Experimental Biennial of Music & Sound Arts — will kick start at Artcenter / South Florida’s 924 building on Lincoln Road from 6-10 PM on March 3, 2011 with a retrospective exhibition of posters from the Creative Design Project for Youth (DCPY), and a reprise of Alvin Lucier’s Music for Pure Waves, Bass Drums and Acoustic Pendulums, a sculptural composition from iSAW’s permanent sound art collection.

The 21st subtropics will also feature music by David Behrman, Alvin Lucier, David Tudor, David Dunn and by many Miami based artists as well as performances by Frozen Music, FLEA, Io, On Structure, UoM, PDMD, Fridamusiq, and more.

Miami artist Xavier Cortada created art installations at the North Pole and South Pole to address environmental concerns at every point in between, and this Thursday, you’ll have the chance see his work and meet and him, while supporting our Miami Science Museum.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Art’s sponsored artists program, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle around the South and North Poles (in 2007 and 2008, respectively), each shoe serving as a proxy for a person affected by global climate change across 24 time zones. Aside from the shoes, the exhibit features flags that were part of the original installations at opposite ends of the planet, as well as works on paper made by melting Antarctic ice. This is the first time that works from both polar installations are featured as part of one exhibit.

Once again, South Florida stages will be filled with snowflakes, sugarplums, naughty little boys, and magical dolls– The charm of the Holidays is back this year, as Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida presents the return of the classic ballet “The Nutcracker.” The critically acclaimed performance choreographed and directed by renowned Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev, will run in Miami, Aventura, and Fort Lauderdale.

With a cast of 104 on stage, this spectacular production features the professional dancers of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida performing the principal roles, while local character artists and children and students of the prestigious Vladimir Issaev School of Classical Ballet complete the cast.

The engaging choreography- from the fun of the party scene- to the harrowing battle scene- to the enchanting kingdom of the sweets- is guaranteed to entertain any age. This traditional ballet is performed every year by Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida to Tchaikovsky’s popular score based on the tale of Ernest Hoffman. Not only is it the most popular ballet enjoyed by all audiences around the world during this time of the year but it also serves as an introduction to ballet for the very young audiences.

Issaev’s choreography preserves the Russian tradition, and serves as an alternative to those who already have seen Balanchine’s version. This year the performance is refreshed with new costumes and set designs. The new costumes for the Party Scene and the Snow Scene are being made at the Ateliers of the Mariinsky Theatre (formerly Kirov) in Russia, while new costumes for the Angels are being created by well renowned costume designer Jorge Gallardo. Finally, a new Tree designed by Elena Bond will be lit in the middle of the stage which along with the beautiful backdrops the falling snow and the special effects, will enchant children and adults during the performance.
